Vincennes
Rivet
Athletic/Co-Curricular
Code of Conduct

The Vincennes Rivet Administration believes that athletes representing their schools have certain obligations pertaining to their conduct both in and out of their particular season.  Every student-athlete is expected to behave in a manner that brings credit to his/her school and squad.  When an athlete’s conduct in or out of school (1) reflects discredit upon the school or (2) creates a disruptive influence in the discipline, good order, moral or educational environment in the school, the student may be declared ineligible for further athletic participation.

Indiana High School Athletic Association’s rules must be followed in all cases of eligibility, transfer, physical examinations, insurance coverage, starting dates, use of school equipment, etc.

All students who choose to participate as athletes for Vincennes Rivet High School shall abide by the rules listed below.  These are to be considered minimum standards for athletes or academic team members.  Individual coaches may set standards above these minimums by notifying in writing each athlete or academic team member and the principal.  All accusations of the rule violations will be brought to the attention of the dean of students, athletic director, and the head coach.  It is their responsibility to investigate all charges to determine disciplinary action to be taken if necessary.

Attendance

Athletes or members of an academic team are expected to attend all classes.  Athletes or members of an academic team absent from classes will not be allowed to participate in a practice or contest on day of the absence.  Expectations to this rule must be approved by the principal.  Athletes or members of an academic team who are suspended from school may not practice or participate during the time of the suspension.  You must be in school all day to be eligible to participate unless you have a doctor’s excuse.

If in school, an athlete or member of an academic team is expected to be at practice.  See your coach and get permission to be absent or late.  Do not send word be way of another student or player.

Alcohol, Drugs, and Tobacco

1.  At no time during the school’s athletic or competitive season, is an athlete or member of an academic team allowed to use or be in possession of an alcoholic beverage, tobacco products, or illegal drugs not prescribed by a physician licensed by the state of Indiana, for his or her use.  The school’s athletic or competitive academic season begins the first days of practice for all fall sports or fall academic competitions and concludes with the school’s final tournament date.

            2.  “Possession” is defined as having an alcoholic beverage, tobacco products, or illegal drugs on your person of having an alcoholic beverage, tobacco product, or illegal drugs in a vehicle which the student is driving, or being convicted in court of law on the charge of illegal possession of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

Consequences

First OffenseThe athlete or member of an academic team shall be suspended for a minimum of 20% of  the scheduled events for that school year.  (Canceled contests will not count towards the suspension.)  Before reinstatement to the athletic or academic team, the student and his/her parents must have a conference with the principal, dean of students, athletic director, and coach.  If the suspension falls near enough to the end of a season that the full 20% of the contests cannot be assessed, the penalty shall carry over to the next season in which the athlete or academic member participates.  If the student is not involved in a sport at the time of the violation, the student shall be removed from 20% of the contest of the first sport season in which the student does not normally participate will not be tolerated.

Second OffenseThe athlete or member of the academic team will be suspended from the team or teams for 365 days from the date of the suspension.

Third OffenseThe athlete or member of the academic team will be denied athletic participation for the remainder of his/her high school career.
