Lunch Program Explained - 2008

Flaget Elementary School operates the National School Lunch Program in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Education and the USDA. The program is here for the nutritional benefit of our school children. We work very hard to make it the best it can be for them.

The school lunch will include one meat/meat alternate, one vegetable, one fruit, bread and milk. We will use a method called offer vs. serve, which means the student is required to take only four of the five items offered and still meet the state requirements. The purpose of this is to keep food costs down and reduce waste by the students. The school lunch menu is published in the school newsletter and is available on the school website at www.vincennescatholicschools.org.

School lunches are served daily to students at the cost of $2.25, an extra entrée may be purchased at the cost of $1.10 and a side dish, such as an extra roll, mashed potato, green beans, etc. may be purchased at the cost of .35 cents. Extra milk, juice, yogurt or water is available for .50 cents. Sack lunches are available daily as an alternative to the tray lunch. This includes a peanut butter sandwich, carrot sticks, pretzels, apple and milk.

Our students also have the opportunity to purchase breakfast, they may choose a cereal bar, bowl of cereal, or yogurt and milk between 7:30 and 8:00 AM at a cost of $1.25. Morning milk, juice, yogurt or water is offered to all students at a cost of .50 cents each day.

Free and reduced price lunches are available through the School Nutrition Program. Families are encouraged to apply at the beginning of the school year or anytime during the year. The Federal Program pays for these lunches and does not come from school funds, so please use this program if you think you may qualify. The information guidelines and application will be distributed the first day of school.

Our computer system will operate on the debit system. This requires money deposited into your students lunch account on Monday morning or at the beginning of the month. The money must be in a sealed envelope marked “Lunch Money” with the students first and last name, PIN number, teachers name or room number, and how much you are depositing into their account. Please do not combine money for other things such as field trips, tuition, play safe, or library books, etc. in the same envelope. Cash will not be accepted in the lunch line except from adults and guests. If you have more than one child in school you may combine your deposit into one check with one envelope, as long as you specify how much you want deposited into each child’s account.

As I mentioned, our software program is a “Debit System”. Each individual will have his or her account. Money is deposited into each persons account and as they purchase food items the cost of these items are deducted from their account balance. During mealtime, at the point of sale, the student’s PIN number will be entered for rapid identification and increased accuracy. Our computer program will keep track of when and what they are eating, as well as, the money balance in their account.

The system is set up so that even if the child has no money in their account they can run a negative balance. This is helpful if lunch money is forgotten on Monday mornings; however, we ask that you not exceed a negative balance of $20.00. If a student’s account exceeds that amount a “Notice for Immediate Payment” will be sent home. If immediate payment is not received a student will be given a sack lunch instead of a tray lunch, and no extra’s will be allowed. Parent notices will be sent home at the end of each week to those with a negative balance and everyone will receive a statement at the end of the month with a complete summary of each student’s account, beginning balance, deposits, what food items they have purchased, and the amount of money in their account.

There will also be a $25.00 service charge for any check that is returned for non-sufficient funds.

Parents are welcome to come eat with their child anytime, but we do require you call that morning to let us know you are coming. The cost of an adult lunch is $3.25.
