Class Information

Homework:
Most nights the students will bring home a Math page from their
Homework Workbooks. These pages closely follow what they learned in
class that day. They are to be completed and returned the next
day. Monday usually entails writing spelling words three times
each, which is due on Wednesday. Many evenings have required
reading, which can be read to any adult. Please check and sign the
Homework Journals nightly. When you sign the book, you are
verifying that your child completed all assignments, even those not
requiring them to turn in anything written. Late homework results in
a reduction of five points per day off the earned grade. Please
encourage you child to complete homework assignments. We try to
keep the workload reasonable.

Spelling:
Each week we will have a list of 15 spelling words, plus a few
vocabulary words. Vocabulary words should be studied mostly for
meaning, but I will also choose three to use as bonus words on the
spelling test. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays. Study each
day!

Language (Reading, Writing, Grammar):
We adopted a new Language series in the 2007-08 school year. We
will be diving into many new stories. Throughout the year we will
work on reading with fluency and expression, and for understanding.
Please encourage your child to read daily. A trip to the Library is
always a good motivator since they can choose what interests them.
We will be taking weekly trips to our own school library also. We
actively participate in the Accelerated Reader program.

We will be working with the "Six Traits" of writing. They are:
Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and
Conventions. You may hear your child use these terms when talking
about his/her own writing, and hopefully when reading. We are also
implementing a Simple Six approach to writing. The students will
build on skills they learn, put them into practice, then be able to
self-critique their work to help themselves constantly improve,
identifying the aspects that sparkle as well as those that could be
improved.

Each week the students will focus on understanding a specific aspect
of English grammar, such as parts of speech and punctuation. We
have a grammar workbook for use in class to help demonstrate
understanding. Mrs. Nichols will be leading the learning in this
subject.

Science:
Throughout this year we will learn to think and work like
scientists. We will observe and ask questions, form a hypothesis,
then plan a fair test, do the test, and draw conclusions and
communicate results. We will put our science skills to work
observing, comparing, sequencing, and classifying. We explore using
our skills to infer, hypothesize, make models, measure, predict,
draw conclusions, and communicate.

Handwriting:
We will be working on neatness in our handwriting. Second Grade will
soon begin to learn cursive writing, introducing a letter at a time
and allowing practice on each. You can help your child by
encouraging neat handwriting in everyday tasks, and by checking for
good hand, paper, and pencil positioning. They also frequently need
a reminder to slow down and do their best.

We usually start our study of cursive writing in October. When we
are through the lowercase letters we will use our skills for writing
Spelling tests and other writing tasks. Then we work our way through
the uppercase letters.

Math:
Our Math explorations this year will involve many aspects of the
various fields of Mathematics including algebra and geometry.
Areas of study will include addition and subtraction facts and
computations, measurement, time, fractions, money, graphs, and
patterns.
In addition to units of study found in our books, this year we will
incorporate a daily opportunity to introduce and/or practice key
Math concepts through short learning activities tied to the
calendar. We will also drill the basic Math Facts. Please help
your child study these till they are mastered.

Religion:
Second Grade Religion builds on the Catholic foundation, exploring
more deeply into our faith, applying its principles, and trying to
live Christian lives. Second Grade also brings an exciting
opportunity to prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation
and Eucharist. School, Parish and Family pull together to bring the
children into full participation in the great celebration of the
Mass.

BIRTHDAYS: Birthdays may be celebrated at school by bringing a
treat to share and enjoy during our morning milk break. Children
with summer birthdays can celebrate their half birthdays.

Meet Mrs. Deal:
I would like to share a little information about myself so you can
better know who your child is spending his/her time with!

I am married (since 1971!) and have three sons. Rob is 30 and is a
sales representative for Nature's Variety pet food. He and his wife
live in Fayetteville, Arkansas and operate and Plato's Closet store
there. Andy is 27, obtained a BS in Outdoor Recreation and
Conservation at IU, and is the Recreation Supervisor in charge of
special events for Owensboro. Justin is 24, obtained his BS in
Biology from IU, and attends the Illinois School of Optometry
school in Chicago. Our sons all attended Flaget/Rivet, then went on
to college. So far I have no grandchildren. Each son does have a
Jeep and a dog, however.

I am a product of the Vincennes Catholic Schools, attending in the
dark ages when we still had St. John Elementary and St. Rose
Academy. I was among the last class to graduate from St. Rose
Academy.

I stayed home with my children when they were young, then took a
position with Miss Jhan in preschool. She inspired me to get my
teaching degree through St. Mary-of-the-Woods, and join the
profession.

I taught Kindergarten for eight years, then was moved to Second
Grade in 2006.

I have been associated with Flaget as a student, parent or teacher
most of my life. I believe strongly in the faith-based education we
provide.
